You've read the headlines. 300 million Apple accounts were hacked. Tens of millions of Yahoo accounts. There will always be more such attacks, and your data may be included.
You can't do anything about hackers at any website you use, but one thing you can do to protect yourself is change your passwords routinely. Sure, it's a pain and you need to write them down or try to remember them. Still, that's better than being hacked.
If you hear of a hack at a site you use, rush to change your password there.
Do keep a list of passwords in a safe place. Do not keep an unencrypted file or document on your computer with your passwords, because if your computer gets hacked, they get everything.
Do not use the same password for multiple sites. You could use a common base password and add additional unique characters for each site.
