Tape Over the Camera on Your Devices

Recent news stories reinforce the vulnerability of computers, laptops, phones and tablets to being hacked to use the built in mic and camera to spy on people.  Bill Gates was spotted with a laptop with tape over the camera.

Most newer monitors and many TVs have built in cameras and microphones.  If you don't use them, cover them.

A tiny bit of dark tape can foil camera spies. There is sometimes a separate pinhole for the microphone, and tape over that will muffle somewhat what it can hear.

It goes without saying that if you use Skype or Facetime or any other two-way video/audio communications on your computer or TV, that you will not be able to use them while covered. Thus that's a tradeoff.

Office computers are less likely to use video chat programs, so cover up all those that don't use such services.

Interestingly, many office conference calling systems are vulnerable to hacking if the default password was never changed. The lesson? Always change default passwords on anything!

Your phone is equally vulnerable to being hacked to use your camera and microphone.  Of course if you cover the mic, you will have problems talking on the phone, and you can't take a selfie without the camera.  Tape doesn't stick very well to the glass on phones, but you can try it if you want.
