Don't Use Public WiFi, Unless...
When you use public wiFi, such as in restaurants, coffee shops, hotels and airports, resist the opportunity to connect to their WiFi.
Why?
Because these systems are often not encrypted, and criminals can intercept your transmissions--and data. Some criminals will set up fake WiFi hotspots, so make sure you are connecting to the real one by asking an employee. I've found fake hotspots at airports--seems tempting, but every unencrypted bit of data you send gets owned by the hacker in the terminal.
If you must use such open WiFi systems, then download a "VPN" (virtual private networking) app, which will encrypt your transmissions on the public WiFi. And make sure it is running when you log onto a hotspot. Do the same with your laptop in such places. Reputable VPNs are not free, but are not expensive. The free ones sell your data.
If you are visiting a country with internet censorship like China, set up at least one and maybe a few VPNs before you leave home. That will be the only way you may be able to log on to your email, social network and many news sites that are outlawed on those countries.
