Leave Computer On--or Shut it Down?

You may have wondered if you should leave our computer running 24/7 or shut it down daily.

Some say it's less harsh on the electronics to leave it on. Others encourage you to save energy.

The truth is computers, like people, tend to get cranky if you keep them awake all the time. So shut it down every night, or at least every few days. Some updates require reboots, and Windows has a nasty habit of restarting your computer randomly to install updates.

The same goes for your phone and tablet.  Restart them at least every week and they may behave a bit better for you, and certainly restart it anytime you have problems or notice it seems slower than normal.

It's a good idea to shut down your computers during thunderstorms--and make sure all are plugged into quality surge suppressors. You can even unplug them before bad storms.

Restarting your computer is also the first troubleshooting step to take if it is acting up. Sometimes that's all it takes to work right again.

Oh, you do have a computer and phone password, right? If not, add one, even a simple password or pin number. That helps keep office cleaning staff or unauthorized employees from assessing data, and if you lose your phone, most phones can be set to wipe themselves after a number of failed password attempts.
